TARGET 160622

SKATING FROZEN AMSTERDAM CANALS

In the hard Winter of 2012, skaters in Amsterdam, Netherlands took the opportunity to skate in many of the city's famous canals. A deep freeze left the canals frozen allowing skaters to skate alongside waterfront boats and houses.

Residents dusted off their ice skates and took full advantage of the cold snap that gripped all of northern Europe.

It was the second time in three years that the waters have frozen over allowing residents to glide on the famous waterways after a similar wintry spell caused the canal to freeze over in 2010.

Breaking the ice to keep the canals open in such weather has been a very expensive task for the city government, so rather than fighting the cold, the city's authorities actually closed the less used canals to motorised traffic at the beginning of February in order to allow the water to freeze.

The impromptu skate rink comes after the Dutch capital saw overnight temperatures dip as low as -10C (14 degrees Fahrenheit).
