HOUSES WITH NO BACK DOORS.

The little village of Castellfollit de la Roca, Spain was originally settled around a thousand years ago.

The village sits on a tall, thin strip of volcanic rock that is about a kilometer long.

It is just wide enough along a good part of its length for two houses and a very narrow walkway between them. Parking is in the square where the land widens enough to have an actual street and parking area (shown in the upper right corner of the 2nd picture, above.)

There is a 160-foot (50 meters) sheer cliff on each side with rivers at the bottom of each. (The Fluviā River on one side and the Toronell River on the other.) For these houses, there are no back doors or back yards.

The land where the town is situated was formed by two massive lava flows, one overlaying the other, in prehistoric times.

The village church is situated at the end of the prominance, and has the largest open space for this end of the village, so the congregation can gather on Sundays, holidays, and for special events.

At the other end, the area widens into a normal sized village, but the village is most famous for its narrow cliffside area.
