The El Oasis Restaurant
at Lake Travis, Austin, Texas

Sitting 450 feet (137 meters) above Lake Travis, on the western edge of Austin, Texas, is a multi-level 30,000 sq. ft. (2787 sq. meters) restaurant, the largest outdoor restaurant in Texas.

Beautiful sunsets

The restaurant promotes itself as the "Sunset Capital of Texas" with its terraced views looking west over the lake.

Why all the umbrellas?

So, if the sunsets are so beautiful, why is everyone under umbrellas? Well, this is Texas, after all. In Texas, in the summertime, it is said that the one thing more valuable and desirable than gold is shade from the blistering sun. The restaurant's location, high above the water, though, provides a nice lake breeze for the customers and the umbrellas provide the shade. That, combined with the excellent food, make the El Oasis a place where people return time and again.

The restaurant was first built in 1982 by Houston entrepreneur Beau Theriot, who purchased a 500-acre (2.0 km2) ranch overlooking the lake and converted it into the current multi-use venue. The construction is "Texas High Country Stone". It is a natural type of construction for homes and other buildings in the area because the land around "Texas High Country" is hundreds of flat limestone layers.

Besides the restaurant, El Oasis has RV parking and camping, art, large meeting rooms for conferences, weddings, etc. (The largest room will hold 2,200 people comfortably.) There is, of course, a gift shop, selling El Oasis t-shirts and other memorabilia, hotel rooms, and......

If you're in Texas, you have to at least have one cow.

FEEDBACK MAP

NOTE: For this dowsing map, I decided to use an aerial view rather than a map, just to give dowsers the experience of looking out across to the horizon and finding a location as you would if flying over the land in a plane. I am wondering how this works for dowsers, and would appreciate some feedback about it. Thanks.
