The burning ring of fire. Photo: Bylgja Guðjónsdóttir/Facebook. The IKEA goat has expired, according to Visir. Foul play is not suspected. On the contrary, the goat is believed to have been the victim of self-destruction. Malfunctioning Christmas lights appear to have caused the goat to fall into a burning ring of fire, which erupted around 1:00 pm today. The animal went up in flames in a matter of seconds and burned itself out in around 5 minutes. More than once, vandals have put fire to this type of goat in the past, resulting in tightened security around the breed. It has, in fact, enjoyed 24-hour protection. “It appears to have committed suicide,” IKEA CEO Þórarinn Ævarsson declares. The goat is made of straw and is not believed to have suffered. The financial pain of IKEA, though, amounts to ISK one million (USD 7,800, EUR 7,000) in Christmas light costs. The goat was six meters (20 feet) tall. Þórarinn says the tradition has been to increase the size of the goat every time it has burned down. The original goat measured 4 meters (13 feet) in height. Þórarinn denies this being a marketing stunt. He maintains his innocence and emphasizes the Christmas lights were not purchased at IKEA. He refuses to reveal where they were bought. “This goat is much too valuable and has much too special a place in my heart for me to put it on fire,” he adamantly maintains. There is no information regarding whether the case is being investigated. ================ http://www.visir.is/section/MEDIA99&fileid=CLP40471http://www.visir.is/section/MEDIA99&fileid=CLP40471 Video (bottom video) of the entire burning (5 minutes) =============== Hafnarfjordur, Iceland =============== http://icelandmag.visir.is/article/video-ikea-christmas-goat-self-destructs-and-reduced-ashes-a-matter-seconds Video: IKEA Christmas Goat self-destructs and is reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds BY STAFF |OCT 26 2015 GONE The IKEA Christmas Goat, a giant version of the traditional Swedish Yule Goat, burnt down this morning. Although the goat is known for being a recurring target for arsonists, this time the fire was started by faulty Christmas lights used to decorate the goat. f99261015_bruni_02.jpg THE SAD REMAINS Photo/Pjetur Sigurðsson Þórarinn Ævarsson, IKEA’s managing director, says the goat was reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds. “We’re rather upset about the whole incident,” he said. A new goat is set to be erected outside the Swedish furniture company’s store in the Reykjavík suburb of Garðabær over the next couple of days. ================ http://grapevine.is/news/2014/10/17/christmas-goat-back-to-tempt-fate/ Vísir reports that IKEA in Garðarbær is already beginning preparations for Christmas. While this means the store itself will be replete with holiday decorations, no IKEA in Christmastime would be complete with a six-metre-tall straw goat standing out front, also known as the Gävle Goat. This Swedish mini-tradition was started by Stig Gavlén in 1966, and seems to be a magnet for misfortune, even in Iceland. In both 2011 and 2013, unusually high winds tore down the Gävle Goat, whose thin metal frame was unable to stand up against Iceland’s trademark gusts. In 2010 and 2012, vandals set fire to the goat. How things will fare this year still remains to be seen. In the meantime, you can check out some photos of Iceland’s version of the Gävle Goat here, and watch security camera footage of the 2010 goat burning below, appropriately set to the tune of Progidy’s “Firestarter”.
