Cooking the world's largest omelette

In an attempt to promote eggs as a healthy and cheap food source, and celebrate World Egg Day, Turkish chefs managed to set a new world record for the World’s Largest Omelette.

Building the cooking frame

The cooking frame was set up the day before, to include the stringing of gas lines and jets to provide even heating across the entire omelette pan.

The event was created by Pruva Neta, a professional tourism agency in Ankara, on behalf of the Turkish Egg Producers Association and Liquid Egg Company Anako, with the support of Rixos Grand Ankara and its executive chef, Süleyman As, and CEPA, a prestigious shopping mall in Ankara.

Let the cooking begin!!

50 Turkish cooks, along with 10 chefs whisked 110,010 eggs on a giant fryer, 10 meters (32 ft. 10 in.) in diameter. It took 2.5 hours to cook, but the people involved could think of no better way to celebrate World Egg Day. 432 liters (114 gallons) of oil were needed to make this larger-than-life-dish nice and fluffy.

Stirring the pot

In order to reach the middle of the frying pan, the cooks had to wield scraper rakes on 5.5 meter (18 ft.)rods. In order to support the rods, they had to rest them on the side of the pan as they work. The constant stirring of the 50 cooks kept the omelette cooking evenly. Once the egg mixture started to thicken, care had to be taken with the stirring. Too much stirring and all they would wind up with was the largest pan of scrambled eggs. Too little stirring, and the omelette would burn in places and still be liquid in others. No wonder it took 50 cooks, working in coordination, to make the omelette.

Ready to serve.

The giant omelette weighed 4.4 tons, beating the old record of 3.625 tons, by almost a ton. After the offcial weighing, the omlette was served to the thousands of by-standers attracted by the smell.

Carim Valerio of the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that it was the biggest omelette of the world.
