THE SOURCE OF POWER!!
(The Largest Hydroelectric Plant In Russia)

The hydroelectric site

The Zeysk hydroelectric facility

Zeysk Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), located near the town of Zeysk, in Siberia, is the largest in Russia and the second most powerful HPP in the Far East. Its role in the Far Eastern energetic system is very significant. It not only produces electricty but also regulates the frequency of an energetic system as well as daily and weekly irregularities of load.

When Zeysk was built, 35 years ago, its construction had to take into consideration the extremely severe climate of the area. It has a number of unique characteristics. Thus, the stability of the facility is ensured by the weight of the construction and special abutments.

Special abutments provide strength

The highest spot of the dam is 115,5 meters (379 feet) and its length is 714 meters (2,342 feet).

Zeysk not only produces electric energy but also protects the adjacent area from severe floods due to a huge water reservoir it creates by holding back the river's waters.

The height of the water.

Five huge turbins generate the power as water from the upper river flows through the vanes, turning the mighty magnets past coils, causing electricity to flow within them.

The turbines

You can see the size of each of the turbines in the following picture, where the roter and top of the turbin have been removed and a person is standing by the open side.

There are also tunnels surrounding the dam which were used to divert the river while the dam was built. They now serve to divert water during flood periods, or when repairs to the dam are required. As you can see, the tunnels are built to hold a tremendously large flow of water.

In the tunnels

Like every other inch of this huge installation, the tunnels must be inspected on a regular basis for cracks, wear, damage from freezing water, and erosion.
