TARGET 110323

Burning Man

Setting fire to the burning man effigy

About to set fire to the Burnng Man

OK. Let's be honest about this viewing target. It may well be the highest scoring session you've ever done, simply because no matter what you viewed, it's almost certainly there (...that is, unless you perceived violence and unhappy times.) As you will see, the Burning Man project brings everyone of every interest together and lets them just have the most creative expressions of their wildest imaginings.

I had serious doubts about using this target as a Target of the Week for that reason. It is way too diverse to simply be a single target. Yet, there is no way to separate the thousands of totally different personal projects it involves from the overall purpose of the site - which is to be different from everyone else. And, if there is any one single thing that you should have gotten from your viewing this time, it is that there is no single purpose here except to be wildly different.

But viewing should be fun, and this is, from its very onset, just a really fun target. So just give yourself a hundred percent score and enjoy the feedback. Of course, the best feedback of all would be for you to attend the next Burning Man Project, yourself. Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. I can give you some feedback pictures and text, but to truly understand this event, one must participate.

The overall site

The overall site

On December 18, 2010, tens of thousands of participants gathered in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They departed one week later, having left no trace whatsoever. This is the ultimate expression of transitory art.

On a single day, the bare, open desert became the bustling city of some 48,000+ people. They made the journey to be part of an experimental community which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one's day-to-day life. This "city" has no electricity or running water, unless you bring your own. Everything that you need for the week you will be its citizen, you must bring with you. At the end of the week, you take everything with you in order to "leave no trace" that you were ever there.

As for feedback to your session, I can only offer about 30 pictures of the various things that went on in the 2010 project. That leaves around 47,970 things that I don't give feedback on for this event. I strongly suggest that you go to the Burning Man website to get a fuller understanding of this wildly spectacular and totally transitory experience of what happens when humans get the freedom to be totally creative.

And to end the event each year, they burn the burning man.
