TARGET 110223

Well, You Shouldn't Have Parked There!!!

He had been warned.

The driver had been warned not to park there.

Having grown tired of hundreds of complaints about cars illegally parked in bicycle lanes, Arturas Zuokas, the mayor of Vilnius, Lithuania's capital city, opted to send his city's abundance of disrespectful drivers a very public, outrageous message.

The wealthier citizens, drivers of Ferraris, Rolls Royces and Mercedes in the city were parking wherever they wanted and simply paying the fines. It appeared that they felt they were bigger than the "little people", so that put them above the law. To prove the point that the law was still bigger than them, the zany politician (and cycling afficianado) decided to show them what "bigger than" actually means. So, he hired an armoured vehicle to make his point.

He then proceeded to drive over the top of an illegally parked Mercedes, a wry smile beaming across his face, while leaving the car crushed. Passing the camera, he triumphantly shouted, "That's what will happen if you park your car illegally!"

Speaking after the incident he's reported to have said: "I wanted to send a clear message that people with big and expensive cars can’t park wherever they feel like and ignore the rights of pedestrians and bike riders.

"It shows a lack of respect and won’t be tolerated. Of course, you have to have a sense of humour in my line of work and I thought this would be a way of drawing attention to the fact that the city intends to be proactive in its fight against illegal parking."

Maybe next time, he'll listen

Maybe the next time, he'll listen

The "money shot" moment of the video is when the 'owner' of the car dressed in a pimp-esque white blazer and gold chain comes out and confronts Mayor Zuokas, with a bewildered look on his face, as the mayor shakes his hand and tells him to park in a legal parking place from now on.

The bewildered owner

"Huh? Wha...what happened to my car?"

Of course, the stunt was staged. It was set up by frustrated members of the mayor's office after they received hundreds of complaints, especially from cyclists, saying that parked cars have been blocking their bike lanes, making them swerve out into traffic to get by. But it was true that the violators were almost always the rich owners of the bigger cars.
