Jindo Island, in South Korea, is host to one of the world’s most amazing natural phenomenons, called the Moses Miracle. Two times a year, during a low tide, a land path 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles) long and 40 meters (131 feet) wide is revealed, uniting the islands of Jindo and Modo for a period of one hour. A festival is dedicated to this natural wonder and people from all around the world attend every year. However the Moses Miracle was largely unknown until 1975, when a French ambassador visited South Korea and wrote about in a French Newspaper. The legend behind this Korean phenomenon goes like this: a Jindo village was attacked by tigers and all the villagers ran to Modo island for shelter. All, except for a helpless old woman who was left behind, out of despair she prayed to the Sea God, who split the sea and helped her escape the bloodthirsty animals. The Moses Miracle just took place on May 18th. ========================= http://koreaanyone.blogspot.com/2009/08/jindo-island-home-of-koreas-moses.html Korea Anyone Blogspot Jindo Island: Home of Korea's Moses Miracle Jindo Island is an island located on the southwestern part of Korea, specifically in South Jeolla province. Located about 120 kilometers south of Mokpo, Jindo is the third largest island in Korea next to Jeju and Geoje islands. By bus, it takes about 6 hours to reach Mokpo from Seoul and another hour to finally reach Jindo from Mokpo. By plane, it only takes 50 minutes to travel from Seoul to Mokpo. Jindo Island is separated from the mainland by the Myeongyang Strait, but the strait is now spanned by the Jindo Bridge, South Korea’s longest suspension bridge. Jindo Island is famous not only for its Jindo breed dogs nor the Baekjodoraeji or the seasonal home of swans coming across the sea from foreign countries, but is also known for its Jindo-arirang (traditional folk song Arirang originated from Jindo). But most of all, Jindo Island’s most impressive attraction is the Yeongdeungsal or what is more popularly known as Korean’s version of the “Moses Miracle”. What is the “Moses Miracle”? Well, it is a natural occurrence wherein twice a year, during the end of February and the middle of June, the water recedes and a land path about 2.8 kilometers long and 40 meters wide is revealed, uniting the islands of Jindo and Modo for about an hour and then submerges again. I actually saw some photos of the said event in various promotional materials for Jindo, and it does leave one wondering, how such a phenomenon happens, a secret of nature that remains unanswered and a complete mystery. To coincide with the Yeongdeungsal, the Yeongdeung Festival is held which lasts for three to four days. Various traditional Korean folk culture performances are conducted during the said festival and is also attended by people from all around the world. So, if you would like to experience the so called “Moses Miracle”, you better start planning your trip to Korea’s Jindo Island for next year’s event. It is made up of 250 smaller islands, and it is famous for the appearance of a dry road in the middle of the sea, near the end of February and mid June of the lunar calendar. As it resembles a passage in the Old Testament in the Book of Exodus, the event is called “The Miracle of Moses”. When the water recedes, a road about 30-40 meter wide and 2.8 km long appears, which stays for about an hour before being submerged again. Jindo Island has some legends which are still popular today, especially that of “Old Woman Bbyong of Hoedongri”. A long time ago, there were many tigers on Jindo Island. When tigers began appearing frequently in the village, the people fled to Modo Island. In the process, only the old woman Bbyong ended up remaining on the island, so the lady prayed everyday to Yongwang, the god of the ocean, to let her see her family again. Around February, Yongwang appeared to her in her dream and said, “I will send a rainbow to the sea tomorrow; ride it and cross the ocean”. The next day old woman Bbyong went out to the sea and prayed again, and the seawater parted as the rainbow road appeared. Through this road, her family and the other villagers came back to the island. Therefore when the sea parts, the people celebrate this phenomenon by holding the Yeongdeung Festival to remember the Old Woman Bbyong. During the Festival, original folk plays of Jindo Island are performed and draws many tourists into Jindo Island. ========== http://www.isabellestravelguide.com/jindo-island.html Isabelle's Travel Guide web site Jindo Island 6 hours from Seoul, the capital of Korea, there is a little island called Jindo (or Jin Island, `do` is a Korean word for `island`). In the Summer of 2007, I decided to explore this mysterious island. The main reason was because of Admiral Lee. He was the bravest man of all time. He built Gubooksun (kind of submarine) and he won most of his battles with this ship. You can see him and his ship in Gwanhamun Square, in the center of Seoul. During that time, I read many good things about Admiral Lee and I decided to go to feel his courage, because Admiral Lee fought for our country in this area. Jindo is the third biggest island in Korea located in the South Sea. Jindo is quite famous because of Jindo gae (= Jindo dog). A Jindo dog is really smart and we have many stories related to the Royal Jindo dog and his/her family. Jindo Island, Korea My very first impression of Jindo was that it`s still untouched. Even though many people know Jindo and it`s quite famous, most places still remain as they were. No neon sign everywhere, no 20 story buildings and no crowds. During the 4 days I stayed in Jindo, everything was just lovely. Peace & quiet and I needed that. I visited several places because of Admiral Lee and among these visits, I came across one beach that really impressed me. That is why I remember traveling to Jindo as a magical time. I am not a big fan of crowded places. That is why I normally don’t go to the beach in the summertime here in Korea. But this one is totally different! Of course there are many beaches around the island but I want to go somewhere where the local people go. I stayed at a little house right by the ocean and I asked a man who worked at a ferry dock: “Where is your favorite beach around here?”. He drew the whole route on the map that I was carrying using a marker. He was so excited about having a tourist in his town and very enthusiastic! That’s how I got this great information. Jindo Island Map After a 20 minutes’ drive, there it was: Seomang beach. It`s located on the Southwest side of Jindo with a great view. Soft blue ocean, mild waves, welcoming summer sunshine, little islands floating on the ocean,… as soon as I saw this beach, I instantly fell in love. Like I said, I`m not a big fan of crowds. There were only 5 people: parents with their two children and an owner of a little supermarket. The sound of little girls giggling while the waves softly crash… what could I want more? Seomang beach is certainly not a big or a fancy place, but for me it`s more than any other great place in the world. Jindo Island Beach Now, sharing this fabulous place, I am having these two thoughts. I certainly want to introduce this place and say ‘you should see this place!’ but on the other hand, I am worried about `what if this place turns to a ‘touristy place’?` This place is charming because of the lack of human touch. Well, this isn`t the case just for this particular place of course. I don’t know the right answer here, but what I do know is that I want to share this moment with my fellow travelers. Jindo Island Beach How to get there? If you are going there from Seoul, take Seohaean highway (West sea high way) to the end. The last tall gate is “Mokpo”. Drive a little bit further. There you`ll see two bridges that connect with Jindo. It will take you about 6 hours from Seoul. No traffic, I promise.
