The AquaDom

The AquaDom
The AquaDom in Berlin, Germany, is a 25 meter (82 foot) tall cylindrical acrylic glass aquarium with built-in transparent elevator. It is located at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Berlin-Mitte.

It was opened in December 2003 at a cost of about 12.8 million euros. The overall construction of the aquarium was designed and built by International Concept Management, Inc. [www.icm-corp.com]. The acrylic cylinder was constructed by the U.S. company Reynolds Polymer Technology. It is now the main attraction of the Berlin Sea Life Center.

The outside cylinder was manufactured on-site from four pieces; the inside cylinder for the elevator was delivered in one piece. The Aquadom is the largest acrylic cylinder in the world, with a diameter of over 11 meters (36 feet), built on a concrete foundation which is 9 meters (29.5 feet) tall. It is filled with about 900,000 liters (235,755 gallons) of seawater. It contains some 2600 fish of 56 species.

The feeding of the fish and the cleaning of the fish tank is performed daily by a pair of full-time divers.

The hotel residents can watch the fish and the divers from the comfort of their rooms (surrounding the center), but don't forget that there is also that evevator going up the center of the aquarium. You can ride it to the top to look down on the marvel, and while riding up in it, you can watch the fish and the divers from inside the aquarium, itself.
